Year 4
Laches Wood 2018 Year 4 - Day 1
So far we are having an amazing time at Laches Wood. We have divided ourselves into two tribes: Survivors and The Weird Warriors.
When we arrived at Laches Wood, we made our beds and settled down into our rooms. We then talked about what we would be doing for the time we are here. After this, we ate some lunch and got ready to meet the chief!
The chief of Laches Wood talked to us about he skills we would need to survive this week. We need to be courageous, resilient and indepdendent.
In our groups, we learned about the fire triangle and the 6 sources of heat. We made our own bread with dough and baked it, fresh, on the fire! After this, we got to eat marshmallows we toasted.
Next, we went into the classroom and made the flags for our tribes!
After dinner, we had fun doing a drumming workshop in the barn! We learned a traditional African chant song, forwards, backwards, knock on the window!

Year 4 First Aid
Today, Year 4 worked exceptionally hard and learned all about first aid in school. We learned about:

When we talked about dangers, this is what some of our children said:
'Something on the floor could be dangerous' - Sammy
'If there was a fire, you wouldn't go into a room' - Harry
'You could trip over bed sheets on your floor' - Jake
'If there was a frightening dog in the corner, you wouldn't go into a room' - Keira
'Electronics are dangerous' - Keira
'Yes, because you could get an electric shock' - Sammy
'If you lay on a cable, electricity might go through you' - Darcey
'You must turn the electricity off' - Lewis
As first aider, even if somebody has a broken leg, we are still able to roll them over onto the injury.
Year 4 at the Christmas Carol Concert
We are in such a privileged position to have so many talented musicians and singers in year 4 class. Lots of our children performed in the choir or played a music instrument.
Inter-house Dance Competition
Year 4 will participate in an inter-house dance tournament that will be held on Monday 18th December. Year 4 will be dancing to All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. The children have spent several weeks practising for this big moment and will be dancing in their house teams upon the stage! Stay tuned for pictures and results!
Year 4 Blog of the Week
Week beginning 04/12/17
On Monday and Tuesday we drew our story maps for the story A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. On Wednesday we did cooking and made cheese, salmon and tuna cakes. In the afternoon, we went to the Old Rep in Birmingham to watch Alice in Wonderland. We also met the new girl who will be joining our class after the two weeks holidays. On Thursday and Friday, we wrote the story A Midsummer Night’s dream.
Week beginning 10/12/17
On Wednesday, we did the story map for our own version of A Midsummer Night’s dream. In the afternoon, we drew our self-portraits and on Thursday, we painted them. Also on Thursday, we had a delicious Christmas dinner. We also started to write our own version of A Midsummer Night’s dream. We also did this on Friday. We tried to finish them and if we had finished, we did it on the computer.
Well done to everyone who has got our advent calendar over the past couple of weeks. If you haven’t had the advent calendar yet, don’t worry because I’m sure you’ll get it soon. J

Anti-Bullying/Creativity in Action Week in year 4
On Monday and Tuesday, we have been creating songs to do with anti-bullying. We worked with students from Newman University. Our teachers were called Mr V, Miss Coxhead, Miss Jukes, and, Mr Masters. First, we went on Novation Launchpad Arcade to practise making backing tracks. After that, we got into groups and put our ideas onto paper. On the piece of paper, we wrote the tempo, lyrics and some of us even wrote which drums, melody, vocals, percussion and FX to use. Everyone performed their songs to the class and got a gold sticker.

Big question: Can you hear sounds in space?
Today we explored how sounds were created from vibrations. We learned the following
Sound is a form of energy.
The energy is made from vibrations.
These vibrations travel as a compression wave.
The compression waves travel through a medium.
We used hex nuts in a balloon to simulate different types of vibrations. We also compared this with a counter.
Ask somebody in year 4 what they found out!
After this, we created telephones with plastic cups and string. We discovered that the string was our solid medium and vibrations travel along it. Without this medium, the vibrations don't reach our ears.
Air is a medium.

Year 4 Marvellous Maths Week
This week, our theme for Marvellous maths week has been all about outdoor reasoning and measuring. The children have enjoyed getting dirty (sorry parents!) and having hands-on experience with a range of measuring equipment on the field. Some of our weekly blog has been written by Erin and Edward! Monday
How can we measure a tree?
This morning, we tried to measure trees. First, we had to think about how to measure a tree. This is what our groups thought we could do and use.
- A metre stick
- A tape measure
- We could measure books and see how many books we will need to get to the top of the tree.
- We could shoot a tape measure with a hook on the end up a tree.
Next, we went outside to measure the height of trees. Here are some steps on how to do it.
- First,you need to find a stick as long as your arm. But, if it is shorter or longer than you arm, you can't use it.
- Next,you line up the stick with the tree by closing one eye and walking forwards and backwards.
- When you have lined the stick up, you put the stick on the floor where it lines up and measure to the bottom of the tree.
But, there was a problem!The measuring tapes and
and metre sticks were not long enough.
To solve this problem we had to use the leaves, feet and tape measures. We used the leaves because every time you measured a metre, you would forget where you were.
Tuesday
Is the height of a tree the same as the circumference multiplied by three?
Today, we measured the circumference and height of trees. To measure the circumference of trees,you have to wind a measuring tape around the tree trunk. .We also had to measure the height of trees but we haven't written that because it tells you how to do it on Monday.
Wednesday
How many minibeasts can we find in forest school? How do we record our data?
Today, we went into the forest school area to collect data using a tally chart about all the minibeasts we could find. We found a range of insects including: woodlice, millipedes, centipedes, ants, spiders and many more! We then decided how we were going to record our data and most of us chose a bar chart to show which animal was the most popular!
Thursday
The tallest leaves have the largest leaves? Always, sometimes, never true?
We got absolutely drenched today and had to run to forest school because of the rain. We were able to have a little discussion about whether we thought the tallest trees have the largest leaves and came up with an idea about how to measure them. Lots of us thought that it depended upon the season as to how large the leaves would be or whether we would see any leaves on the tress at all. We also had to be very careful that we were picking the correct leaves from the trees!
